Teaching
Origami in class. Spring 2024.
As a disabled woman and an international scholar, I am attuned to normative ideas about achievement and ability that operate in the classroom. I ensure that classrooms offer care, accessibility, and multiple ways of expression and engagement. I use varied facilitation strategies that respect classroom diversity and accommodate preferences for learning and participation to create an engaging classroom environment.
I aim to create classroom environments where all students, particularly those from historically marginalized backgrounds, have a space to share, develop, and critically engage with ideas. I believe that learning happens when students are provided the space and tools to challenge, support, and refute their existing notions about the world. An important teaching goal for me is to develop critical thinking and analytical writing skills among students through dialogue.
My teaching philosophy is a commitment to designing classroom spaces rooted in praxis. My lessons focus on cycles of theory, practice, and reflection toward understanding contradictions and tensions in the social world towards action. I support students in examining power structures and their position relative to power.
